RSU Softball Names New Assistant Coach

Rogers State head softball coach Andrea Vaughan announced the hiring of Chris Nakashima as an assistant coach for Heartland Conference tournament champion Hillcat softball program.
“I’m excited to add Chris to our coaching staff,” Vaughan said. “He has a proven track record and reputation within RSU Athletics, and I felt he was the right choice to help sustain our success and keep us moving in the right direction. Part of building a successful program and staff is to ensure you have great chemistry and hard work ethic, both of which I am confident Chris will bring to RSU softball.”
As an assistant coach for RSU softball, Nakashima will share responsibilities for player development along with recruiting and fundraising efforts.
Nakashima joins the Hillcat softball program after completing his collegiate baseball career on College Hill in 2018. The Mississaugo, Canada native played his final two years in the navy and red after starting at Garrett College for his first two college seasons. As an infielder and designated hitter, Nakashima helped propel the Hillcats in 2017 to their first 30-win season since 2013 as the navy and red went 31-19 in the 2017 campaign. As a senior in 2018, Naskashima and the RSU baseball program put together its third straight winning season with a 26-24 record. For his career, Nakashima appeared in 32 games with 15 starts. While at Garrett College, he hit .305 with 12 doubles, two home runs and 26 RBI as a sophomore. Nakashima was named the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at Garrett College.
Nakashima graduated from RSU in 2018 with a bachelors degree in sport management.
RSU softball won the Heartland Conference Tournament championship in 2018 as the Cats went 39-20 and advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason play for the first time in program history. Along with Vaughan, the 2018 Heartland Conference Coach of the Year, the softball coaching staff includes assistant coaches Nakashima and Malari Moss, who enters her third season on the coaching staff.
